Some sailors struggle to steer the Challenger or would simply prefer to be taken for a sail. While the buddy seat makes it easier for the buddy to reach the tiller it isn't very comfortable for the buddy to steer for long periods of time. The solution is to use a tiller extension.
A standard tiller extension can be used - it doesn't need to be long - one about 600mm should be sufficient.
The main problem is that it isn't possible to fit the base of the tiller extension's universal joint directly on to the tiller and a bespoke "widget" is needed. Ideally the wideget (and therefore tiller extension) will be easy to remove so the tiller extension does not get in the way when it is not being used and is easily transferred from Challenger to Challenger as required.
The widgets shown below both fit on to the more common "hooped" tiller. Challengers with a straight tiller will need something a little different.
